At
the Coop we promote the healthy growth of the children inside
and out. We serve Organic milk (whole milk for ages 1-2 and
2% from 2 on up) we use fresh organic fruits and vegetables
whenever possible. We focus on whole grains and a vegetarian
menu. Water is always available and children are encouraged
to drink throughout the day.
We
provide breakfast which consists of cereal, fruit and milk.
Each quarter we host a “PJ
and Pancakes Day” where children and staff show up in
the pajamas and are served pancakes with warm berries on top!
It’s a big hit with the kids.
Families
are asked to bring in a healthy lunch (no sugar or prepackaged
items) in a 3 sided plastic container. The containers allow
for many lunches to be stacked in the refrigerator as well
as to cut down on the amount of waste that we produce through
prepackaged items and items sent to school in plastic bags.
After
naptime, children awake to a healthy mini-meal which is larger
than a snack and smaller than a meal. Some mini-meals include:
Stir fried rice with veggies and tofu, red lentil soup with
whole grain rolls and tomato soup with toasted cheese sandwiches.
We vary our menu often and change with the tastes of the children
and the seasons. Families are encouraged to submit snack ideas
that reflect their cultural background. In April we had haroset:
cut up apples, cinnamon and grape juice, served with hard boiled
eggs as many of the children were celebrating Passover.
Our
late snack is just enough to tide children over until they
get home. A cheese stick and raisins or amaranth crackers and
milk are examples of what we serve for our late snack. |
